Legalizing Marijuana Should we legalize recreational marijuana or just legalize medical marijuana or should any type of marijuana be legalized at all? These are some of the big questions people are asking these days. The first law regarding marijuana was in 1619 (Stingl). The law required farmers to grow hemp, the fiber made from its stalks helped in making sails, ropes, food, and fuel. Doctors thought that marijuana had medical benefits so it started being sold in pharmacies for over a hundred years or so (Stingl). Since 1937, marijuana been illegal, but many people have fought to legalize marijuana. When congress decided to classify marijuana as a Schedule I drug in 1970, that has made it more difficult to try and legalize it (Stingl,).
