In this country and city (Ann Arbor) we have a growing number of people wanting to try cannabis (commonly known as marijuana). Currently it is illegal in most of the country to be found with or consuming marijuana. In Ann Arbor particularly the punishment is a $20 fine if you do not have a card. Though in some areas even being in “possession of marijuana is punishable by up to one year in jail and a minimum fine of $1,000 for a first conviction” (FEDERAL). There needs to be a solution to this growing problem.

It was documented that cannabis can increase your appetite, help you relax, reduce pain, and help sedate. There are many groups that think legalizing marijuana is necessary to help treat only critically ill patients. An example of these groups would be the National Lymphoma Foundation or AIDS Care. These groups believe marijuana to be beneficial because it helps stimulate their patients’ appetites and subside nausea. The pro legalization groups also state that while morphine is readily available to their patients, it can have more side effects, costs more, and can be more dangerous. So this brings up the elephant in the room: why not just legalize cannabis if it is more cost effective, easier to obtain, and less dangerous?
