Marijuana is one of the most controversial issues in society today. Marijuana is cannabis that is usually smoked like a cigarette. THC is the ingredient that gives people the feeling of being high. It is perceived by some people as addictive, dangerous, and a gateway drug. According to CNBC’s article “Why we should not legalize marijuana”, “Drug-impaired driving is also said to increase if marijuana is legalized” (CNBC, 1). They also believe that marijuana is the leading cause in highway crashes, deaths and injuries, but for the first time in years more Americans are becoming in favor of making marijuana legalized. Statistics show that over fifty- seven percent of Americans believe marijuana should be legalized, while only thirty- six percent feel it should not be; making it five points down from last years numbers. …show more content…

People have been using marijuana for medical uses for years. Western medicine in the 1800’s were said to have embraced the drugs medical properties. Studies show that smoking marijuana can relieve pain associated with insomnia, cancer, glaucoma, nausea, and some movement disorders. In recent years, medical marijuana has become important to a lot of people. A study done at Harvard University showed that the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in marijuana had been found to reduce the size of tumor growths in many cancer patients. It also aids as an appetite stimulant for people suffering from HIV/AIDS, and eating disorders like anorexia.
