Living with Dyslexia

People like myself are often confused with being mentally challenged due to the fact that we just learn differently from others. I have a neurological disorder known as Dyslexia which makes something as simple as reading, writing, spelling and pronouncing words challenging for me. Let’s not get it twisted, I can do all those things. That’s not the issue, I just have a very difficult time without the right resources. In elementary school, I was often teased when reading out loud because I stumbled over words or had to use a colored overlay to assist me. “Why does Deedee have to use those colored things to read?” I would hear that under the breaths of classmates when asked to read out loud. I am not a victim, and I hate when people treat me like one. I can do all things that you can do, if not better. My role in society is sometimes difficult …show more content…

Some of the other students began to laugh and she assumed they were talking about me. She went on to say that “Deedee didn’t get that question wrong because she’s dumb, she got it wrong because she’s dyslexic.”, which to me was just another way of calling me dumb. I used to hate reading out loud in class, so when I got called on I would often suggest for someone else to read or just ended up saying no to reading. Some people associated that with me being lazy when in reality I just didn’t want my weakness put on front street for everyone to see. (Question 5) I think for most people, as for myself, the main question is: why? Why does dyslexia make it so difficult to read and write? What happens in my brain that doesn’t happen in yours that makes me this way? The May Clinic Staff (2014) states that “Dyslexia is linked to certain genes that control how the brain develops and it appears to be inherited.” As far as why it occurs is a question that researchers are still searching for.
