The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as ObamaCare, was enacted in 2010. It was created with the intent of providing affordable healthcare to millions of citizens without any discrimination of any sort. Now, universal and more “affordable” healthcare has been a hot topic of discussion in American politics for many years. Many western industrialized countries have, to a certain degree or extent, adopted universal healthcare as a basic human right regardless of age, race, sex, immigration status, etc. America was the sole developed country in the world which does not provide healthcare on that universal basis. The origin of ObamaCare started in the early 90’s when then First Lady Hillary Clinton bringing the issue onto the national stage and making it her main agenda throughout her husband Bill’s presidency. ObamaCare promised to make prescription drugs more affordable. Many citizens are unable to afford all their medications. The number of prescription and generic drugs covered by the ACA is growing every year. Money saved on prescription drugs will be projected to exceed $10 billion within the first three years of Obamacare. Thousands of people suffer and ultimately die, due to the fact that prescription drugs vital to their well-being, are not just simply affordable in the long run. The National Health Service (NHS) of England set the costs of expensive drugs, like the medicines for the treatment of AIDS patients, for a fraction of the retail price – Why can’t the USA – the most richest and industrialized country in the world- follow suit and make most essential generic medicines affordable to each and every citizen?
