Deep sea exploration can have a variety of benefits. It can provide new information about marine species. This exploration can also teach scientists about adaptations organisms use to survive in unsuitable conditions. However, there is also a lot of controversy surrounding the search for oil. I believe that oil should not be drilled offshore, because it can possibly damage local economies. Additionally, instead of getting more oil, money and time should be used to find ways to use the energy we have more wisely and finding renewable resources. Lastly, offshore oil drilling should not be allowed, because it would cause damage throughout the ecosystem and the atmosphere. Offshore oil drilling actually can damage local economies rather than help them. While it may help them by providing jobs when an oil company first arrives, the number of jobs will drop drastically once the oil runs out. An oil spill is always a risk when oil is being drilled for. A rig, tanker, or pipeline can become an environmental tragedy so suddenly. The only way to reduce this risk is to simply not drill at all. There is no way to 100% prevent an oil spill. Obviously, an oil spill can cause lots of damage to the oceanic ecosystem by blocking sunlight from photosynthetic marine plants and smothering animals. Referencing the economy, tourism, fishing, and other water activities would not be possible and the economy would be damaged. Additionally, seismic surveys are used to find oil deposits. These powerful sound waves can negatively affect marine animals by affecting their reproduction, migration, and communication.
