Imagine being fourteen and all your friends are talking about experimenting with sex, and how “cool” it is to do so. All the while you are still mostly in the dark about this topic and don’t want to embarrass yourself in front you your friends, and the near thought of asking your parents nauseates you. So who do you confide in to get the insight you need? This is where the importance of Planned Parenthood comes in. They are a not-for-profit organization that provides comprehensive sexual educational services to not just teens but also both women and men. Thus allowing them the ability to make informed sexual decisions to prevent unplanned pregnancies and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Planned Parenthood also offers service such as birth control, morning after pills, cervical cancer screenings, and many more. The most controversial service offered by them being abortions. Without Planned Parenthood where else can adolescence go to get the education and services they need, all free for teens seventeen and younger in many different states? Some adults also count on Planned Parenthood, in fact “one in five American women has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at least once in her life.” (www.plannedparenthood.org) Planned Parenthood takes those who are uninsured or have lower incomes, offering low cost examinations, services, and prescription birth control. In some cases these can be free depending on the patient’s financial situation.
