There are constant headlines today about the refugee crisis. There are many regulations and rules surrounding migration. This topic is very controversial due to the fact that displacement has caused many of the tensions today. Displacement comes down to a power struggle. Nation states solve this problem in a way. The states are stable and so are their borders. The nation states control the migration patterns in and out of this country.
Migration has been a problem for most of human history. There were controls put on the movement of individuals. In places like Europe, migration is much more controversial because they do not have a powerful system of assimilation. In the United States, assimilation is much more imbedded within our society. Throughout the twentieth century, there were an expansion of international organizations to help facilitate this migration in a regulated way through countries like these. They are defined as fleeing some form of persecution. They cannot return to the country they came from or else their life will be in danger. Only recently as the League of Nations has there been an international responsibility to protect refugees. More organizations budded from this to help regulate and protect refugees. As a country of the United Nations, there is an agreement to take on refugees. They must apply for asylum and are notably vetted by the countries. There is an international solidarity on the issue of refugees that developed. This solidarity later became questioned as nativist movement became to rise. However, these protections from UNHCR are still viable and were reinforced in 2000 through conversations with governments, agencies, non-governmental organizations, and refugees themselves.
