21 June 2017 Later Start Times Everything in the California Education system is set up by the State Department of Education. Laws have been written to cover everything that has to do with what students and teachers can do while a student is in Kindergarten until he or she graduates from college. If someone is interested or curious about how to do something or when to do something as a student, or a teacher, principal or cafeteria worker, they can check with the California Education Code to learn what the laws are and how to do it. However, there are reasons to allow the start time of the school day to remain as it is, and there are reasons to change that to a different time. Some of these reasons for a change are that students receive better grades when they are well rested when they arrive at school, they are better focused on their lessons, the students experience calmer attitudes which leads to fewer discipline problems, and they achieve higher grades. Others may argue that a change in the time will affect the parent's’ ability to transport their child or children to and from school or it will prevent the student and the family from participating in extracurricular activities. Although parents might not be able to drop their children off, school time should be later because students will benefit from the change. These benefits include them being more attentive in class and achieving better grades;
