Standardized testing One thing that connects the older generation with the more recent is one common problem and that is testing. Standardized testing is most notably used by to help measure a student's growth. It is also used for state and federal accountability, diagnostics, end-or-year predictions, and fulfilling the requirements of specific grants. Standardized testing should not be what defines a student's growth because they limit a student, are a major factor when dealing with the students and school's future and a majority of the people also believe it is irrelevant. States and districts are cheating and lying for federal funding. The amount of funding a school gets is determined by how well students score on a test as stated in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. In a high school in Brooklyn, New York a school was willing to keep students they believed would fall out of school; going so far as to pulling them out of class. "The school had kept students that did not have enough credits to graduate"(Dolezalek 83). A student's future can be determined simply by one test score. Scores on SAT and ACT can help determine a student's entire future. Some colleges won't even look at an applicant's paperwork if the test scores aren't at least average. They depend on test scores to tell them if the student is ready for college. The issue with relying on these test is that the test do not take in the student's personality, discipline and motivation.
