Starting only around four to five years ago, a disastrous war has affected the lives of thousands of Syrian lives. Things such as finding a home, getting education, and overall basic survival has become a real challenge. But, many are finding hope in places from a small secretive library, to large refugee camps; and this is how they’re doing it.
Syrian refugees are struggling to survive and find homes with all of the fighting taking place.
According to Mike Thompson in “Syria’s Secret Library,” 8,000 of 80,000 people have fled Darayya. Meaning, a huge group of people had to leave their homes for the sake of survival, and finding a new place to live isn’t always easy. Because of the war, getting an education is difficult for Syrian refugees. Back at the Zaatari refugee camp, camp schools were built to help continue education (Associated Press 3). Although, just because these schools are being built, doesn’t mean everyone can go. In fact, most students in these camp schools have to drop out because they can’t afford it (Associated Press 4). People aren’t just learning in schools, but also in libraries.
A secret underground library was built in the city of Darayya, which brings information for hospital volunteers, untrained teachers, and soon-to-be dentists (Thompson 1). Meaning, more education for more people.
Not all is bad for refugees, however. Refugees are finding new forms of entertainment because of the war taking place. One thing that has become very popular is soccer. Hundreds of girl spend their free time playing soccer, where they can have fun and meet new people (Associated Press 4). For those who just want to relax, a garden was made in Zaatari, which became a popular gathering spot (Associated Press 3).
