Most teens that attend Winston Churchill High School will tell you that they want the school’s start time to be later than 7:45 a.m. My bus comes at 7:20 a.m. and I, along with many other kids need at least 30 minutes to get ready. I leave my house at 7:10 to make it to the stop which means I wake up at around 6:30 a.m. Don’t forget “the most important meal of the day” is breakfast, so if you eat breakfast take away about 20 minutes and there you have the average wake up time - 6:10 a.m. The costs of pushing school start and end times later can also be bad. Everyone needs it and an insufficient amount is detrimental to your overall health. Teens in particular need eight to ten hours of sleep a night. In a study done by the Northern Illinois University, only 15% of most teens have reported sleeping eight and a half hours a night. Biological sleep patterns, in teens, tend to shift later in the day for waking up and going to bed - meaning it’s natural to not fall asleep before 11:00 p.m. If a teen falls asleep at around 11:10 p.m. and had to wake up at 6:10 a.m. they would have about 7 hours of sleep, which is ultimately not enough time to sleep, Not having an ample amount of sleep has many consequences to it. One consequence, not much discussed, is an increased attraction for coffee. If you don’t get enough sleep you’ll most likely be drowsy which is negated by caffeine. Surprising enough, caffeine can cause insomnia and insomnia is the inability to sleep at times. If teens don’t get enough sleep, then they are at a higher risk of consuming more caffeine - possibly causing health issues along with the effects of sleep
