The general argument that Nancy Kalish creates in her article, “The Early Bird Gets the Bad Grade” focuses on why students would benefit from a delayed start school. The article lists several ways different school districts have already taken advantage of late start. The author writes, “In 2002, high schools in Jessamine County in Kentucky pushed back the first bell to 8:40 am, from 7:30 am. Attendance immediately went up, as did scores on standardized tests, which have continued to rise each year”(5). The author uses this quote in order to provide examples of school systems who have already benefited off of delayed start times.

According to Sifferlin,in When Sleep and School Don’t Mix, the school has seen so many improvements among student since it required them to be at school start later. The percentage of late students dropped around 3% from the 2011-2012 school year to to the 2013-2014 school year. The number of student falling classes dropped 2.2% and the absentee rate dropped 1.5%.This reveals that kids were arriving on time and the number of student falling classes decreased at least by 2 percent. These articles that are written by Michelle Trudeau and Dan Weissman both agree on the fact that high schools should start at a later time. In both articles, they both give facts on how a student can benefit from it. Michelle Trudeau states,”To help sleepy teens, some school districts have tried delaying the opening of the high school day. She is saying that teens are more sleepy in the morning.
In the beginning of the article, Weissman states, “The American Academy of Pediatrics has joined a chorus that’s been growing louder for years: The school day should start later for teenagersbecause they aren’t wired to go to bed early — and they need their sleep. The AAP says this is a public-health issue: Sleep-deprived teenagers are more likely to crash cars, get depressed, and become obese. Also, they may not do as well in school. Teenagers aren’t getting the sleep they need to have their minds and bodies function correctly. Not getting enough sleep can lead to many health problems. Teenagers and kids not getting their sleep can result in many different mental and physical problems.
Elizabeta Nrecaj Ted talk essay The TED topic I chose is called “Why School Should Start Later for Teens” by Wendy Troxel. Before picking the talk I had a strong argument towards schools starting way too early. I went to a school that my first period was 7 am and it was so hard to focus in my first few classes because I was so tired. When I found this talk I was surprised and happy that someone else feels the same way that I do and is supporting the argument. Troxel is qualified to talk about this topic because she has children of her own and she knows the pain of waking up early.
Outdated legislation should not be the cause of our country 's future to be at risk, schools should start later in order to mend the growing problem of time management and achievement among students. As the history of the current start times are explained, the illogicality of them present themselves. Imagine that you’re going home from school but when you get there it is already dinner time because your school starts later because of the schedule change. This makes it so you can not do as many activities since it also ends later. This is why school shouldn’t start later. School starting times are discussed and debated about constantly. When conversing about when a child should start school, people have many different opinions on what should happen. On one hand there are people who believe that schools should push back the starting times, while on the other hand there are people who believe schools should begin early. Both of these types of people are correct in their own way and exploring this issue proves to be a worthy cause with the points that are brought up by each side. When discussing when students should go to school, people seem to believe that if the starting time of classes were to be pushed back, then students will pay more attention to their teachers and what they are learning.
Today we are going to talk about whether or not the school day should start later. When you don’t have enough energy for school, you don’t do well. No one necessarily said that it was the student’s fault. Many elementary school students are forced to get up at 5:00 in the morning to get ready! School just starts far too early.
