Sarah Cardillo October 31, 2017 Class Period 3 Why School Start Times Should Be Later Teenagers and kids these days are loosing a lot of their sleep time due to early school start times. Teenagers aren’t getting the sleep they need to have their minds and bodies function correctly. Not getting enough sleep can lead to many health problems. Teenagers and kids not getting their sleep can result in many different mental and physical problems. Schools can help their students get the appropriate amount of sleep if they decide to move school times later. Students grades will improve, behavior will improve, and sports performance will improve with the correct amount of sleep. So all in all, more sleep is a great thing. There are many negative impacts on teens if they don’t get enough sleep. Teenagers and kids not getting enough sleep could lead to many mental health issues.According to the American Sleep Association, if you don’t get enough sleep it could lead to depression, weight gain, mood problems, and higher glucose levels. When moving the start times later attendance rates went up. The teens that started school in Minneapolis at 7:25 am had 4 times as much tardiness as the teens that started at 8:30 am. When teens can just have that extra hour of sleep it gives them time to wake up and get ready for their day. When schools changed their start times later their students grades and extracurricular performance went up significantly. Moving the school start times gave teens a good extra hour of sleep and made the recommended hours of sleep which is 8-10 hours a night, giving teens enough energy to let their brains function best. Plus moving the start times helped kids with their extra curricular activities like sports, and their performance improved.
