Sleep saves Lives
Not getting the right amount of sleep can lead to depression and increase chances of other deadly outcomes. It is tough for students to get the appropriate amount of sleep that they need because most teens do not get tired until eleven at night and school starts at seven thirty. Not getting the healthy amount of sleep can increase the chance of students getting into car crashes, increase chances of students doing drugs, and lastly increasing sleep times increases attendance and test scores. Pushing school start times back will benefit all kids by letting them get the sleep they need because if teens do not get the recommended amount of sleep it can affect a teenagers long term physically and mentally as well as their academic

When teens do not get the sleep that they need it can be detrimental, lack of proper sleep, “can lead to depression and obesity in teens, along with poor academic performance and experimentation "with tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs”(early start times detrimental to teen students). This confirms that not letting students get the sleep that they need can be detrimental to them. Not allowing students to sleep for an adequate amount of time can affect them for the rest of their lives. Since lack of sleep decreases teenagers academic performance it could prevent them from going to a good college or going to college at all, this can also affect kids for the rest of their lives because if kids don't get enough sleep it can lead to them making poor decisions like doing drugs and tobacco which can hurt their body and in some cases people are not able to recover from these addictions. When students do not get their required sleep it causes them to be less attentive. This is a problem for kids when they on the road driving to school. A study done shows that “When teens increased their sleep, crash rates declined 16.5% during a period when teen crash rates throughout the state increased by 7.8%.” (Holohan). This is a very large issue because students being tired and less attentive can lead to fatal crashes that could take their lives. Schools do not need to push start times very far back in order for students to get the correct amount of sleep. Studies show that “When schools start as late as 8:55 a.m., over 65 percent of students will able to sleep eight or more hours per night. For schools that begin at 7:30 a.m., the study shows, only 34 percent do so”(Kelly). This illustrates that it would not be a very hard task for schools to allow students to get the time that they need to sleep. By pushing school start times back by just over an hour almost half the students were able to get the correct amount of sleep. This depicts that changing the start time to just a little bit later it can allow for students to live a healthier lifestyle and decrease the chance of them participating in illegal activities. In all this shows that it would not be that hard to change school start
