In the article, “Our Kids Need More Sleep”, written by Valerie Erde, the author talks about school timing and discusses her opinion on whether it should be pushed back or remain the same. Erde mentions how if students get more sleep, they can report to school on time more often and also be ready to learn at all times. Because of this, she and others believe that school should not start as early as it does. I agree that students need more sleep but I do not agree with her on changing the school timing because kids would still not get enough sleep
For the last few years, schools across the United States have made conscious efforts to delay school start times. The push for a later school start has been led by doctors and parents who believe students do not receive the suggested eight-and-a-half hours of sleep daily. A later start time does not guarantee more sleep for students as students may just go to bed even later usual. A later start time could also change the times for after-school activities for many students. As a result of a later start time, both students and teachers will come home to families late into night.
Most of these students stay up late doing homework. This is not because they have too much, but because they procrastinate. If students don’t procrastinate, they will finish their work faster, which leaves them with more time to sleep. It would also leave people with fewer after-school hours which would have a bad impact on younger kids and athletics. School start times should not be moved back because sleep deprivation is not because of start times and later start times would mean less after school hours, which is bad.
Sleeping Schools Countless students all over the US struggle to keep their eyes open throughout the day because school classes start too early in the morning. If we were able to give an hour to students in the morning, we would see an increase in their physical mentality, their academic skill level, and an overall happier lifestyle. Many people will argue that starting school too late in the morning will cause after school activities -- such as sports and other clubs -- no time to meet before the night ends. But I must mention that we don’t need to push the start time that much later to see a huge improvement on student’s test scores, overall grades, and a student’s mood. The current school start time is unacceptable when thought about logically, and we must make the changes to have school start at a later time.
These problems can be fixed though, the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvements at University of Minnesota claims.(Kalish 1-2) In conclusion, lack of sleep can affect scores in school and tend to raise dropout rates. Putting a later starting time can improve student academic scores and lower dropout rates. Even though scheduling may be tough, Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvements claims it’s quite possible.
High school starts at 7:30 in the morning in most places. High school students typically get up an hour before or earlier in order to get ready for the day ahead. High schools should begin classes an hour later so that students may have more rest so they may be more aware and more likely to learn. If school began an hour later this would let students get more sleep, as they would more than likely continue to go to bed at the same time they do currently. “Research shows that teenagers’ body clocks are set to a schedule that is different from that of younger children or adults.
When kids are tired, their grades are usually worse than other kids. They don’t think straight or they just mess up. It would be better if school just started after 8:30. There are studies that early is better too. But there are more for later being better.
Exhaustion makes you grouchy and depressed. Having a good nights sleep makes you feel refreshed and so much better than not getting enough or any sleep at all. The thought of starting school classes later is a magnificent idea. It gives children more time to sleep and to feel more refreshed when they wake up and head off to school. One of the best things is that students will not be tired in school.

Early School Start Times Most adolescents don’t get nearly the correct amount of sleep and the early school start times make it worse. Having school start later would have a great impact on teens’ overall health. Some people may say that teens should just go to sleep earlier, but its not that easy. Early school start times should be changed because they are dangerous, inconvenient, and it negatively affects body growth.
