Most individuals have heard the precarious health effects of tobacco use although the health effects should be a reasonable cause to make tobacco illegal more is needed to support the efforts. Many fall short to acknowledge the other adverse effects it may cause to ones life. Tobacco can effect an individual in ways such as decision making, learning, and the environment that surrounds them. This makes all the more reason to ban a substance that can create such hazardous effects. The use of tobacco should be illegal because it promotes bad habits in adults, negatively effects children, and damages the environment.

The populations of animals could be affected if they are being exposed to the chemicals in cigarette butts. By making tobacco illegal there would be less waste found in the environments poisoning animals in the ecosystems but instead the opposite effect is taking place. The amounts of this debris can and already is causing detriments to the environment which is shown through, ”Cigarette butts were also the most collected items during clean-up efforts in other locations, including retail areas, storm drains, loading docks, construction sites, parks and playgrounds. Along beaches and waterways, cigarettes were the number one debris item picked up over the past 25 years during the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.”(Rath et al., 2012). Many will argue that tobacco brings in much revenue to the economy. There is evidence that supports this claim such as, “The economic activities generated from the production and consumption of tobacco provides economic stimulus. It also produces huge tax revenues for most governments, especially in high-income countries, as well as employment in the tobacco industry.” (Ekpu & Brown, 2015)Click and drag to move. Even though there is confirmation that tobacco products are beneficial to the economy it does not mean that the argument to make tobacco illegal should be disregarded. The economy’s profit is not worth more when deteriorating conditions for people and the
