Smoking cannabis is prohibited throughout the majority of North America, and yet it can be used for medical purposes, whereas tobacco has no medical properties, but is still legal. So, why is smoking tobacco legal? The two most common answers are, addiction and/or necessity for relaxation. In reality, there is no valid reason in the 21st century for smoking tobacco. Smoking tobacco still exists because any attempt to abolish it in North America throughout the last decade, has failed. Large tobacco selling corporations buy their way out of shutting down or add warning labels that legally pardon them from any responsibility for the use of their products. Smoking tobacco is like a murderer that escapes persecution every time. The use of tobacco for smoking should be banned, as it is an unhealthy habit that not only affects the lives of first-hand smokers, but also the government, second hand smokers, as well as the community. Smoking affects the lives of approximately nine million five hundred sixteen thousand people (eighteen percent) of North America's population directly (Smoking & Tobacco Use). Of which one hundred fifty-six billion dollars is lost productivity. Meaning that more money was spent but there was less work done, than planned. If there were no tobacco users, that money could be used for a greater good such as cancer research. Out of the total people in the hospital five hundred thousand ended up dying of which fifty thousand were the result of second hand smoke exposure. The government should expel smoking tobacco to protect people from having to go to the hospital and then that money could be used to help sick
