How often are you driving down the road and see someone next to you casually smoking? It is so sad to see that that is socially accepted and even the norm these days. Smoking is one of the major killers in America and almost 480,000 innocent people die every year. For several years people have been smoking in public thinking ‘it’s my body I can do whatever I want,’ but it has been confirmed that smoking also harms others around them. Smoking can do a tremendous amount of harm to others, and the government needs to realize how affective it is, so they can start protecting citizens.
Being exposed to second hand smoke can happen easily. People are most commonly exposed to second hand smoking at work, cars, and homes. Almost everywhere you go it appears to be that smokers are permitted to smoke there. By permitting people to smoke there, nonsmokers are put at risk of smoking related problems. Scientific studies have shown that for a single smoker, the smoke outside travels about 6 feet. It’s been estamated that one hundred and sixty five thousand children under the age of five years old, die every year from respiratory infections caused by second hand smoking. Almost every day, about 3,200 people under the age of 18 years old smoke their first cigarrette. To make matters even worse, 41,000 deaths happen a year from second hand smoking.
