Cigarettes have been around forever. The earliest recognition of a cigarette has been dated back from 600 to 900 A.D (Health Literacy). Many individuals in today’s society are obsessed with the small cylinder filled with tobacco. It’s a dangerous addiction that can start at an early age and have people hooked for life. People who regularly smoke believe it relieves stress and makes them feel more relaxed. The possession of cigarettes should be illegal for a few reasons. To set better expectations, protect the environment, to improve health and prevent deaths (Tobacco Control).

Air pollution is also a colossal problem when it comes to smoking. Two main atmosphere polluting chemicals are carbon dioxide and methane. All the smoking world wide releases an estimated 2.6 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide and about 5.2 billion kilograms of methane each year. Second hand smoke is one of the many dangers of smoking. Smoker’s themselves are self aware about the danger, but they still continue to smoke anyways. They’re simply addicted to the nicotine and just can’t get enough. There’s an estimated 600 ingredients in a single cigarette. When burned, there’s more than 7,000 chemicals are created. There’s about 70 of these known chemicals to cause cancer and many are poisonous (Lung.org). 18 out of 100 adults in the United States smoke cigarettes daily. This means that 42.1 million adults in America are smokers. Stunningly enough, smoking causes around 480,00 deaths per year. That’s roughly 1,300 deaths a day.
