What do we want? “EQUAL PAY!” When do we want it? “53 years ago!” This statement although funny is true and is something that till this day people are still fighting for. If you read this statement and the wheels started spinning in your head, you will know that this statement has resonated with people, especially women, for a long time. When you read the words equal pay its name says it all. It means that people want to be treated fairly/equally with respect to pay. We will be looking at more at the Equal Pay Act to see what changes were made then and how that change is affecting women now.

Due to the war taking place women had to do the jobs that men were doing to provide source of income for the family and to be of aid to the war, through manufacturing. Why not pay women the same thing as men if they are doing the same? This is where the need for the equal pay comes in. The Equal Pay Act prohibits “prohibits sex discrimination in compensating people doing substantially the same jobs.” (Berman, 2001). In 1964, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act making it illegal to pay women lower rates for the same job strictly on the basis of their sex. When correcting a pay differential, no employee’s pay may be reduced.
