Pharmacy Store Observation Paper

The store I did my observations in is the main grocery/pharmacy store in my small hometown of Perry, IA. The pharmacy section of this store uses bright lighting, it is located at the front of the store, and it contains many different kinds of products. Between both of my observations I only saw one person go through and look at products. He was an older man and he seemed to not have an idea what he was looking for because he just walked around; the man first looked at TUMS and then he went over and looked at different vitamins, but eventually left the area without actually buying something. When looking over the aisle and paying close attention to how the products are displayed I noticed that as you progress down the aisles all the products go together. In one of the aisles it starts with pain relievers, then it progresses down to idol and other menstruation pain relief, and next it becomes urinary tract medication; it starts very broad and then becomes more specific as you progress down the aisle. Another example of this would be the flu and cold section. The aisle starts out with very broad with the basic flu and cold medicines and as you travel down the aisle it becomes more specific in what they help with; after the basic medicines it goes to cough and throat medicines and ends with mucus control medications. A more radical example that I observed was in the kind of pregnancy/feminine products area. On one end of the aisle there are condoms, next to those are the pregnancy tests, and on the end of the aisle are the tampons and pads. One thing that I saw and had never realized before was that they have the condoms displayed on one of the ends that is hidden; this suggests that buying these preventative products is seen as dirty and must be hidden from the view of all customers who aren't looking to buy them.By putting all these products next to other products that are directly related to each other makes the shopping experience for the customer much
