Classroom discipline is important when attempting to develop a positive learning environment. All grade levels can benefit from having guidelines within the classroom that help manage the classroom. The four strategies described in this chapter are divided students into base groups. These groups provide and teamwork atmosphere that promotes leadership and responsibility. Within each base group, captains are assigned and responsible for their own materials. I can see this approach effective in a high school classroom, because it allows high school students to display leadership and be accountable for their contributions amongst their team. I have yet to view this strategy in any classroom I have observed, however, I plan to apply this method within my classroom. This strategy will be useful to physical education class because the lessons taught focuses on teamwork, leadership, and cooperation. The rules provide a classroom constitution for how to behave in class. At the school where I teach 9th grade students, I am required to have classroom rules because students transitioning from middle school are still learning how to be successful students in class. Throughout my experience, without rules in the classroom, especially in the inner city, classrooms would be unstructured, unorganized, and consistently disruptive. Every effective teacher throughout all grade levels should apply classroom rules in order to help students develop into lifelong learners. Classroom discipline provides consequences for actions.
