Mr. Watson was nonchalant about his problem and almost reluctant to make changes to improve his classroom. In this scenario, the supervisor initially uses the directive control approach, which means she has to completely dictate his action plans. Ms. Janice Smith, in the second scenario, was moderate in her developmental level because she at least recognized her problem. For this field experience assignment I decided to use a students from Mrs. Carrillo’s 2nd grade class who wishes to go by the name of “Elsa” for this activity. Elsa is a student who is still currently learning English, and whose primary language spoken and written at home is Spanish. Mrs. Carrillo expressed that she is falling a little behind in most subjects because of the language barrier but she is definitely progressing and improving as the school year moves forward. Field Experience Reflection 2 I completed my second set of field experience during the summer semester at Athens Elementary School. This field experience included a summer enrichment camp hosted by Athens University at the elementary school. The facilitator of this enrichment program at Athens Elementary was Dr. Hodges. During this camp there were a total of three classrooms.
The various activities required to complete the Administrative Field Experience has made me competent in this field of study. I am confident that the material that I have learned and the activities that I have participated in will allow me to enter an assistant principal role with knowledge and skill to take on the duties, responsibilities, and challenges of an assistant principal. The greatest strength that I will take into the role is my ability to help others. I have a strong belief that my job is fulfilled when and only when I can share my ideas with teachers so they can too perfect their craft.
I first learned about the career fair through a assignment I had to do for a class. We had to look up different types of information for the companies that were coming to the fair. Through this assignment I kind of got intimidated because the information that I was looking up was all new to me. My professors made the career fair seem scarier than it actually was. Many people were complaining about going to the career fair and were blowing it off.
In addition to the knowledge I have gained the skills which I have gained from my personal experience and which I have gained while on both field placement and I have been applied with clients, these skills includes, Verbal and non verbal communication ,interpersonal skills, respect for diversity, intervention skill, Case noting, Advocacy skill, Critical thinking skill, Self-awareness& Turning a negative in to positive. These skills are transferable to new potions for instance, communicating with people is necessary while working in the helping profession; this can include both clients and other professionals. There are a few main classroom management procedures set up in my block classroom. My mentor teacher has management procedures set up that encourage students to take responsibility for their class work and class materials. The underlying reason he uses the procedures he does is because the age, maturity, and overall responsibility skill are varied due to the blended freshman and junior atmosphere. One management strategy that my mentor uses within his classroom and it proves to be effective, is when a student misses a day of school it is their responsibility to ask what they missed and when to have the late work turned in by.
As a freshman, career fair can be a stressful time of the school year as it is a new experience. Once the career fair finally arrived, the time before and during left a sense of nervousness, despite the preparations I made. As I walked to and from classes, the idea of talking to companies that could offer you internships was the only thing on my mind and it took a lot of time to build of the courage to just walk to Lied Athletic Center. The nervousness I felt before arriving to the career fair did not compare to the nervous when it came to the time to talk to companies.
As Bradley Wiggins, a British cyclist, once said, “The changing of goals helps keep motivation fresh.” Similar to Wiggins, I have been experiencing burnout with regards to the academic goals that I made prior to attending Drexel University. For instance, when I started my academic career at Drexel, I was extremely motivated to attain academic excellence and to join community service-oriented organizations. Having been a student at Drexel University for the past four years, I have been able to accomplish most of those academic goals. As a result, I have been feeling lost as to what my next plan of action should be, which has been challenging my motivation to exceed in academia.
Field Reflection This semester, I was at Waldron Mercy Academy for my field placement. I was able to observe eight different teachers through my 9 weeks of attending field, which I found to be very beneficial to see how other teachers work and manage their classes within the same school. Between those eight teachers, I observed sixth, seventh, and eighth grades language arts, sixth grade social studies, seventh and eighth grade science, and eighth grade Latin/study skills/high school prep class. This upcoming week, for my last week of field, I will be observing a seventh-grade history class.
I started doing my field Experience in Lime Kiln Elementary school where I shadowed Mr. Mikalov, a fifth grade teacher, When I first walked into his classroom it was so colorful and full of artworks, student works and inspirational quotes I felt happy walking into his classroom so I would imagine what a fifth grader would feel like. Mr.Mikalov was very generous in showing me around the classroom where they have their group work, reading area on the rug. He showed me the schedule they follow every week, they do math every day from 12:13 to 12:55 and have lunch every day at 11:26- 12:08 and off course I took a picture of it to know when and what they are doing that time. Mr.Mikalov introduced me to the principal who is very nice and welcomed
This reflection will discuss my key learning’s in the workshop from module 4 – ‘Developing leadership in self and others’, and integrating it with the article by Kelly (2008), ‘Management mentoring in social service organisation’. Within the group discussion, we talked about what a mentor is and the function of a good mentor in the social work field. Ragins and Scandura (1994, pp. 962) in Kelly defines a mentor as “an individual influential in the work environment who has advanced experience, knowledge and is committed to providing upward mobility and support to careers”. The group identified the function of a mentor depends on what the mentee (protégé) wants to learn from the mentor, the situation, learning facilitation and a mentor who is supportive and guiding, which exhibit the function of a mentor.
Now days the Professional development is essential for our life, it can provide the drive to progress careers, kept across the industry competitive and, ultimately, can make you more employable. Professional development is something you will do every day of your life without even thinking about it; however, being aware of the development you learned will allow you to record this and develop in a proffessional way. In order to be effectively in work field and your lifetime, it is important that you need to improving your knowledge and skills continually to keep yourself at high levels of professional competence. When I finished my degree at university and go to work area I found difficulty to deal with problems in work field, because the people I met are think in different way from people where I was at university, it is something like to put someone inside box for long time after that you put it in crowded area and he or she has to communicate with these people in order to be up to date for life changes.
Professional reflection As I began my field experience journey, I learned many roles and responsibilities as elementary teacher. My duration in the field was nine weeks. I began training at E. R. Dickson. I developed a great working relationship with the staff and parents in the community. I always knew teaching is my passion.
