There are a few main classroom management procedures set up in my block classroom. My mentor teacher has management procedures set up that encourage students to take responsibility for their class work and class materials. The underlying reason he uses the procedures he does is because the age, maturity, and overall responsibility skill are varied due to the blended freshman and junior atmosphere. One management strategy that my mentor uses within his classroom and it proves to be effective, is when a student misses a day of school it is their responsibility to ask what they missed and when to have the late work turned in by. My mentor does this in order to track student’s participation in class and performance on in class work. There are only 3pts assigned each day (so not a lot) but at the end of the semester the way he calculates his grades it could bump your grade up or down an entire letter grade. This gives students incentive to stay on track every day. I hear at least one student everyday asks about their performance points and if they are doing a good job. My mentor won’t take off a point if for example a shy student doesn’t participate in class discussion everyday but when they work on in class assignments that same day (ex: worksheet) they are on task and working then they will get their participation points. The participation points are given out based on the relationship my mentor has with his students. He knows the student’s personalities better than I do and can evaluate more clearly which students are working up to their potential and challenging themselves. I think daily participation is great especially for high school. I feel like many students work day by day so having a daily grade helps them to stay focused on doing a good job in class that day. It also shows students that missing one day or not getting full point’s wont effect their grade that much.
