PLC’s are an important part of the equation to provide students with the best possible opportunities to learn and grasp concepts. When educators as well as staff and administration in a school participate in professional development everyone benefits not only students but all involved. Kleine-Kracht (1993) “suggests that administrators, along with teachers, must be learners too, questioning, investigating, and seeking solutions for school improvement. The traditional pattern that teachers teach, students learn, and administrators manage is completely altered and there is no longer a hierarchy where someone knows more than someone else, but rather there is a need for everyone to contribute”. The following are five attributes of PLC’s and a brief description of them.

At times this might not be an easy task, but when they participate in the professional development this task of identifying a clear learning target becomes easier. “In the education setting, the learning community is demonstrated by people from multiple constituencies, at all levels, collaboratively and continually working together” (Louis & Kruse, 1995) At the campus I’m at we have a campus PLC once a month, departmental PLC four times a year and two to three times a week we have a content/grade level PLC. We are required to post the learning objectives (target) in a manner that the student can clearly comprehend what they are going to learn for that day or week. When we have these PLC’s we can discuss how to simplify the objectives so that students can understand them. We also discuss ways to plan the lessons for these objectives based on previous experience, research and campus
