There are many specified departments to choose from within each branch. The department that continually catches my eye for the future would have to be the police department. This department has already impacted my life so much already, that I would like to have a future in a law enforcement agency. Careers with in law enforcement are so rewarding and continue to be throughout your career. The career I am planning to obtain in the future really is to become a criminologist, but I would enjoy starting off as a police officer to obtain the experience. This is the same for law enforcement of course! Background checks are used for many reasons. Background checks could be used to check your employment history, academic records, credit history, and most importantly your criminal history if you were to have one. The department that is hiring will run background checks on all of their candidates. After the background checks are finished the candidates will then have to be drug tested. They do this for obvious reasons. No full time job will hire you if you are using illegal drugs especially law enforcement. Before you are hired you also need to be psychologically evaluated. To become a law enforcement officer or to even work for any government agency you need to be psychologically stable and mentally fit. These jobs are very stressful and could affect a person in a very bad way. You will see things you never thought you’d see in your entire life and you need to make sure you can mentally handle it all. After going through the psychological testing you will then have to meet with a polygraph technician to take a polygraph test. A polygraph test is basically a lie detector test. Considering that law enforcement offices are located everywhere! The size and population of a town effects the number of stations located within the area. The population in the town that I live is 92,093. With this there are three stations, one being in South Toms River, Central Toms River, and also a Sheriff’s office located within the town. Having a large population means that there is more of a demand in officers compared to a town that has a significantly lower population. Showing that there will always be jobs in law enforcement. It is an amazing career, it’s not for everyone but it is very rewarding know that you are one of the many reasons why the town you are in is safe for others to
