Poseidon is a greek god with the power of the earth and sea. Some sources also say that poseidon is the god of horses and storms. Poseidon is the second son of Cronus and Rhea and is the brother of Zeus and Hades. He also goes by Neptune in Roman. In Greek there is 12 gods that are said to live in Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. Poseidon is one of the 12 gods that lives on Mount olympus, these gods are also known to be on the olympic council that Poseidon was also on. Poseidon has a lot of likes and dislikes, such as some people try not to make poseidon angry because he has a very bad temper and when he gets upset, it is told that he would create storms such as hurricanes, just so he can get back at them. One really famous story is the fight between Athena and Poseidon which comes in a lot of different variations. One variation of this story is when the original leader of Athens, Cecrops, was looking for a guardian or protector of Athen. Cecrops asked Poseidon and Athena who was more valuable to this city-state. So Poseidon took his trident and struck it to the ground and water came rushing down, but the water was too salty. Then Athena took her sword to the ground and an olive tree arose from the ground. The olive tree symbolizes peace and prosperity. Cecrops was more impressed with Athena’s gift than Poseidon’s gift, so Cecrops choose Athena as the new guardian and protector. Since Poseidon has a bad temper he cursed the city of Athens to never have enough water. Another variation of this story is a story that is similar to the first one, but the one difference is that Poseidon and Athena were fighting about who gets possession over Athens. Poseidon wanted the Athenians to worship him as their primary god, so he stuck his titan into the ground and water came rushing out of Athena's plateau. Athena grew an olive tree next to it and big luscious olives grew and so the Athenian judges decided that Athena's gift was more valuable than Poseidon and they granted her top honor.
