Marijuana, a drug first used in 1894, comes from a widely cultivated herb called hemp. The possession and use of weed is considered illegal in many countries, especially in the United States. Throughout its outlawing, the drug has been given a vastly negative connotation, causing many people to believe authority figures disapproval towards the drug. However, despite the negative connotation given to weed by social and political platforms, the positive effects that come from its legalization will help America thrive.
Legalizing weed, or specifically marijuana, has many beneficial medical factors that politicians eagerly try to conceal. For much time now, cannabis has been in terms of medication, improving and creating better health standards.

In other words, due to social media being filled young adults who tend to believe whatever they see on the internet, the negatives of marijuana are effortlessly shoved down their throats. Cannabis is displayed in such a destructive manner that makes it hard to root for or stand behind it’s legalization. One of the leading campaigns behind anti-marijuana is the path towards criminal activity and poor judgment in decisions. Huffpost proves this wrong, “Legalizing medical marijuana causes no increase in crime, according to a new study. In fact, legalized medical pot may reduce some violent crime, including homicide,” (Legalizing Medical Marijuana May Actually Reduce Crime, Study Says). Marijuana poses no threat in increase of violent crimes, identified by states who have legalized medical marijuana from 1990 and 2006, instead seeing partial decline after the legalization passed. In essence, we must not let powerful authority figures take advantage of their social platforms in order to control our opinion on prominent and controversial issues, but instead consider the facts to determine a reasonable conclusion. They argue that it can be lethal to the human body, disregarding medically proven facts. However, marijuana has shown to be helpful, and it will only lead to dangerous aftermaths if abused and not used with precaution. Weed should be controlled instead of completely removed, because by banning cannabis we’re ignorant to the fact that it’s needed for medical uses and the few that abuse it don’t represent the general population. Treatment centers support this ideal, “The likelihood of dying from marijuana alone is extremely remote, although marijuana use can lead to death because of the activities people engage in when high” (Promises). Furthermore, we’d be selfish to establish the outlawing of a drug that patients have argued to be a beneficial factor in saving their lives. Realistically, testimonies from real people who have experienced marijuana should hold more weight than what is advertised to us.
