Marijuana is a drug that has been around for a very long time. Many people throughout written history have used it for medicinal reasons, to make clothes, paper, and people even ate the seeds as food. (History.com) The plant was widely grown throughout the America’s in the early 1600’s as well. It was easy to cultivate and had many uses, but these plants had low levels of THC. Many people at this time did not know about the psychoactive properties of the drug, they were just using it for the medicinal uses and the many other uses for it. The drug was not made illegal in the United States until 1937, and since then it has been illegal, until recently when states began to legalize the use of it for medical purposes.
As drug use, and the use of marijuana has risen exponentially, the use of marijuana is back in the spotlight. The question about whether the drug should be legal or not has arisen. This has been a very prominent question for the past few years and will continue to be until the debate is resolved. Many people believe that the drug should just be legalized for recreational use, some believe that it should only be used for medicinal purposes, and many people believe the drug should just be illegal, and not be used at all. …show more content…

The biggest argument for these people that are for the legalization of recreational use of marijuana is that marijuana is safer to use than alcohol and tobacco. “According to the CDC, six people die from alcohol poisoning every day and 88,000 people die annually due to excessive alcohol use in the United States.
