Marijuana has been used for centuries for manufacture purposes, however now more people are taking advantage of marijuana irresponsibly and because of this, many people have died or faced horrible tragedies. It was used for fabric, cloth, rope etc. and other purposes way back in the 1600’s. Marijuana was once legalized in America during the 1600s because it was used as a crop for war requirements like rope and other essential products used during this time. However, later in the 1900s, drugs like marijuana, were banned and the Harrison Act in 1914 was passed. It was now recognized as a dangerous drug because of the effects it has on the human mind and body. It can cause confusion and lack of focus, sleeping problems, losing interest in daily activities, being depressed and dropping their studies such as work and school. They can also be paranoid and secretive in their work as a result of the drug and it can cause severe stomach pain, nausea etc… Most importantly marijuana can also affect babies if used during pregnancy. Marijuana can affect the baby because it affects either their physical or mental abilities because of the THC in Marijuana that has an affect on the brain, heart and even lungs. For example, babies now can have a higher risk of developing asthma, chest infections and breathing problems. They can also even have a lower birth weight, poorer eyesight and a higher chance of having a defect in the heart just because of smoking marijuana during a mother’s pregnancy. Marijuana, surprisingly, is also related to anencephaly, which is a horrible condition where the baby is born without some or all of the brain. Also, horrifyingly, “[a] study from the University School of Medicine found that marijuana use during pregnancy was associated with a nearly threefold increase in fetal death, even if there was no other substance abuse.” This is crucial to determining that we should ban the usage of marijuana because of how it can affect our children’s future.
