Marijuana, or “weed”, was discovered around 2727 BC. The chemical in weed that creates the euphoric feeling is Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Marijuana is a drug that is smoked and within minutes, it causes extreme euphoria. In recent times the argument of the legalization of marijuana for recreational use has arose. Marijuana has very many positive aspects and should be legalized throughout the country. Marijuana has very few physical effects on the body. People think marijuana kills brain cells but that is a tell tale. Though marijuana can decrease motivation and drive in some individuals. “High-dose smokers can develop pulmonary symptoms and pulmonary function may be altered, manifested as large airway changes of unknown significance. However, even daily smokers do not develop obstructive airway disease.” (O’Malley). Though frequent smokers may experience coughing, marijuana has not been linked to and cancers of the throat of mouth like tobacco has. Contrary to popular belief, marijuana will not debilitate its users. Legalization of marijuana has not affected crime rates. People have felt like legalization would increase crime rates. The rate of health related problems caused by alcohol are much much higher than marijuana. Marijuana is healthier in ways such as: Marijuana has never been overdosed on, marijuana is less addictive than alcohol, marijuana stops the spread of cancer, alcohol leads to more signs of depression and finally, alcohol has many links to deaths of Americans. Why should a substance that does not lead to death and overdose be illegal? Alcohol is consumed in order to have fun and so is marijuana. However, marijuana comes with less risks.
