The congress has several important powers that help exercise the checks and balances for the executive branch. The most important power given is being able to have the power to overturn a presidential veto. Usually, when this is issued, the president can either chose if they would have a bill to become a law, or veto it and have it sent back to congress. Given this power, since the bill is sent back the congress are able to overturn the veto and change the bill into a law. Congress is also in control of passing budgets and along with distributing funds. The congress gives the two chambers, house, and senate, unique powers that different from one another. The majority of the money is focused on military, medicare and health, education and veteran benefits. Overall I would have to disagree with the amount of money focused on spending. The nation should focus more on education to help inform more Americans, rather than place all the money to be spent on the military. If education is increased then more people will have diplomas and degrees providing more people with better job opportunities. The Democratic party supports more of the money used on social spending to support welfare, food stamps, unemployment benefits, Medicaid and other programs designed to support people in need. Meanwhile, the Republicans do not believe in funding much of their taxes are increased because of the support for the democratic views. They understand the need for the programs but favor tighter controls and less funding for them. The Republicans are more towards government funding of privately run social programs while Democrats believe the federal and state governments should run social welfare programs. Based on the two parties on their view of spending on social programs, I would agree more with the republican party. I do not agree on more money to be spent on unemployment benefits and food stamps because this does not allow our nation to grow. Anyone can apply for these and it is unfair to raise taxes for those who work hard for their money to be given to those who chose to not try
