The point of these oral presentations was analyze how the authors of the texts presented their persuasive arguments. The goal of my group in particular was to read the text carefully, more than once, and break down techniques that the author uses to make himself more credible, logical, and emotionally connected to the reader. My partners and I looked for patterns in the author’s writing style and tried to understand why he chose the words he used. In, What You Eat Is Your Business by, Radley Balko, it is evident that Balko uses humor and rhetorical questions to make his point that literally what you eat should be your own business.
Both use many persuasive techniques to make claims, support their thinking, and get the reader to agree. In the article, “Position on DodgeBall in Physical Education.” The writer makes a claim using the persuasive technique of logos to help convince readers that dodgeball isn’t good for Kids and that Dodgeball isn’t suitable for Physical Education. To begin, the author tries to persuade the reader by stating data as, “61.5% of children aged 9-13 years do not participate in any organized physical activity during non-school hours and 22.6% do not engage in any free-time physical activity.”
In “Thank You For Arguing”, Jay Heinrichs teaches the reader how simple it can be to get things your own way through persuasion. Throughout the book, the author uses methods that can help move an audience from Cicero’s three-step strategy to examples with present issues. Heinrichs has been in the media business for over 30 years working as a writer, editor, executive, and consultant. With 3 books published, “Thank You For Arguing” has been used in over 3,000 college courses and has become a New York Times bestseller. In the world of persuasion we can learn from it, realize how useful just one chapter can be, and discover if a book should be continued in educational courses.
Within “Thank You for Arguing What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach us About the Art of Persuasion,” Jay Heinrichs, a skilled editor, and author with a long history of rhetoric delineates a very educational lesson over the power of persuasive writing or speaking in order to interact with the world around us. He accomplishes this by lucidly describing the steps to become a powerful persuader. My favorite chapter is chapter 7, which proves, to me, that this book should continue to be used in schools. Heinrichs organizes the book by explaining the skill then recounting an anecdote to help further explain when and how the strategy is most useful.
Starting Tuesday January 17, 2017 – TODAY - all students must park in the upper student parking lot. This includes late arrival and early dismissal students. I have been in school for thirteen years, a staggering 76% of my life; and after all this time nothing has changed. Every single day I get served the same unhealthy, inedible lunch. It is something I can no longer do, I will no longer sacrifice myself to clench my hunger and thirst with this nauseating, unsavory, unappetizing food. Yes breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many of us do not get to eat breakfast because we are rushing to get to school. So why not fight for a better school lunch that all kids can enjoy and energize from?
