Although the Civil War happened in the 1800s, there are still debates about the primary cause of the Civil War. Slavery in America started in 1517, 25 years after Christopher Columbus first traveled to America in 1492. During the Revolutionary War, there were slaves in every state. After the Revolutionary War ended, most people realized that there should be no more slavery. Shortly after the Constitution was adopted, there was a law made that made it was illegal to import slaves from Africa. This law did not end slavery because children of slaves would become a slave. The first reason why slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War was because it created tension and conflict between the northern and southern states. The southern states relied on the slaves heavily because they didn't have many factories, but had huge farms and plantations that slaves would work on. The northern states didn't want slavery because they had many factories. The slaves would have to work for free, so many white people lost jobs or had very low wages because they had to compete for their job with slaves that wouldn't that to be paid. In 1819, there were the same number of free states and slave states. During 1819, Missouri wanted to become a state. The northern states were scared that if Missouri would become a slave state, then all of the other states that would form out of the Louisiana Purchase would also become slave states. Some southern states seceded because they thought that since Abraham Lincoln was elected president that slavery might be illegal. The South did not like Abraham Lincoln. They did not want to risk losing slavery, so they left. South Carolina left first, then some other states followed. The states that left called themselves the Confederate States of America. The states that were part of the Confederate States of America were South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri were called border states. Border states were states that were slave states that were located on the border between Confederate States and free states. Then, the Civil War was fought and the Confederate States of America reunited with America. Albert Gallatin Brown said "Disunion is a fearful thing, but emancipation is worse. Better leave the Union in the open face of the day, than be lighted from it at midnight by the [arsonist's] torch." He meant that although disunion would be scary, being forced out of the country is worse. They wanted to leave because they wanted to instead of the North kicking them
