Determining the theme that is developed through reading the privacy policy statement that Facebook provides its users is an easy task. Whether the privacy policy statement is utopian or dystopian is not tough to distinguish. It is remotely clear that the privacy policy has a utopian perspective due to the positivity and optimism surrounding the features provided by Facebook. In order to understand the privacy policy statement of Facebook, it is important to be able to define both utopian and dystopian, or anti-utopian, perspectives. In regards to the reading by Rob Kling, these viewpoints are easily described. Facebook essentially tracks user’s “likes” as a way to facilitate ads that are intended to be shown to those company’s target audience, which is stated in the privacy policy as a benefit for users. The ads they come in contact with are related to user’s interests based on their likes, shares, and other information, therefor there is a possibility and opportunity present for that individual that they otherwise, may not have been aware of prior. Facebook makes a declaration that they do not disclose information without consent; this displays the advertising strategies in an upfront an honest way that puts users at ease, allowing them to feel as ease. The section, “How we Share Information,” Facebook guarantees their user’s privacy while instilling how idealistic their communication platform is. They ensure that individuals cannot be identified by the information they put out when stating that “sometimes [they] share aggregated information with third parties to help improve or promote [their] services. But… in such way that no individual user can be identified or linked to any specific action or information.” People respond to honest, open communication. Facebook’s authenticity has a psychological impact on their users, such that when people are told exactly “what is so,” they do not feel manipulated. In fact, they may even feel a sense of support in the cause of the matter. This potentially eliminates the negative views of Facebook’s user. They make each Facebook user feel comfortable by creating Facebook as a perfect social media platform, which does not have potential negative impacts on its users. Every possible issue people may have with the site has a positive feature in its place that counters that issue. This takes the heat off of the negatives of Facebook, and the Internet as a whole, and really highlights how the benefits outweigh any negative
