The United States is known as a “melting pot” of millions of people from all different kinds of backgrounds and nationalities. Immigrants are attracted to this land in search of a better life. To escape from the harsh realities of war and instability in their home countries. They want to start fresh in a new land, with all kinds of opportunities. These are the same reasons why the Puritans fled to the United States, and why English peasants left their native England. Even our first founding fathers were immigrants. If our ancestors originally came here, why deny the same to today’s people? Legal immigration benefits America by improving the economy, enriching culture, and expanding education in the STEM areas.

One notable example is in medicine. Different practices of easing pain have surfaced from all over the world through immigration. Natural healing methods have spread, such as the practice of acupressure from Asia, and the use of herbs from Latin America (Kumar). Communities can benefit from these methods, instead of going for the more traditional approach of using pills like ibuprofen. Cuisines from overseas have also made their debut, being showcased in ethnic restaurants in many major cities. Whether it’s Filipino, Mediterranean, or Italian, traditional cuisines consist of a diet of “whole grains, many vegetables, and good fats” (Kumar).
