Proposition 56: A Sociological Analysis Of The Tobacco Industry

Everyone knows what a cigarette is and what it contains, tobacco. The tobacco industry is a gigantic powerhouse profiting 35 billion dollars in 2012. (Eriksen, Mackay, Ross 2012) Proposition 56 increases the amount taxed on all tobacco products by two dollars including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and any other products containing tobacco. The projected fiscal impact of this proposition would increase state revenue anywhere between $1 billion to $1.4 billion in 2017-18 with lower revenue in the following years. The money collected by the new tax will be used to supplement spending on health care for low-income Californians. Individuals are subordinate to society and social order is obtained via coercion. This theory sees social change as productive that benefits society as a whole due to innate problem of the institution. From a conflict perspective, if this proposition were to pass, more power will be given to the government than the industry themselves. More advertisements with clever product placement will be incorporated. In magazines, a well know figure will possess a tobacco product in hand or in commercials the “cool” kids is seen with a cigarette.(3) This creates an association that in order to be someone famous or “cool” you need cigarettes. The passage of this proposition will change the image of the tobacco industry to something anyone can relate to. The messages will become more personalized in order for them to create a sort of emotional connection to the product such as showing people laughing or having a good time with cigarettes. It creates this connection showing that in order to experience happiness you have to buy tobacco products. From this emotional appeal, they will draw customers back into buying their
