In the past ten to fifteen years, the popularity of zombie stories has risen drastically as more television shows and movies about such stories are created. America’s fascination with zombies in general fits with this narrative quite well. Shows such as The Walking Dead and movies like Zombieland or 28 Days Later have shown to be quite popular among viewers in the United States, especially among the many “zombie buffs” or apocalypse preppers. Merchandise from these shows and movies can be found in stores across the country, as can somewhat cliché zombie books and zombie apocalypse survival guides. People who are already predisposed to violence could be influenced and just “snap.” It is a concept similar to the one behind the use of “trigger” warnings for those who may be suffering from depression. Violent video games related to zombies could be negatively impactful as well by bringing out violent tendencies. These games can almost dehumanize or familiarize violence and encourage violence through gameplay, even if the game mostly consists of shooting at zombies. Are these violent tendencies really a bad thing? I believe they may be, particularly because sparking violent tendencies in some can lead to innocent people being injured or killed. There have been news stories where people who were used to playing violent video games didn’t think twice before committing a similar act in the real world. People could suffer unnecessarily simply because of the increasing interest that the zombie trend has gathered in recent years.
