I am strongly against building a coal-burning power plant. It is bad for the earth and it would be easier to find an alternative and save the life of thousands. Let’s work together and get rid of air pollution and save lives.
Coal-burning is the primary source of global warming. Coal burning plants typically produce 3.5 million tons of CO2 per year! (Union of concerned scientists)Toxic air pollution, acid rain, and smog are all caused by burning coal. Some types of emissions would help the pollution be controlled, although most of the U.S. coal plants have not installed these emissions. Coal burning pollutes the water, crops, land, and air. About 24,000 lives are lost in coal mines annually just in the United States. (Union of concerned scientists) I am strongly against the coal-burning factory because of these reasons. Generation from coal plants has been estimated to be second only to agriculture in being the largest domestic user of water. (SourceWatch) It is also crazy how much power a coal fired power plant needs! A 1000 megawatt coal fired power plant produces approximately the same amount of global warming as 1.2 million cars! (SourceWatch) Coal industries have the largest percentage of anthropogenic carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Coal contains minor amounts of radioactive elements, uranium, and thorium. (SourceWatch) Disposal of fly ash is all over and there is no federal regulation for it. It is disgusting how the federal regulations don’t specifically govern the disposal of power plant discharges into waterways or landfills, so lead and arsenic pollute the water. Only one of 43 United States power plants must limit how much barium is dumped into nearby waterway. (Source Watch) Barium is linked to heart problems and disease; (Source Watch) it’d just be smarter to not have any in the
