When we talk about legalizing drugs such as heroin or cocaine in the United States, we ask the question why. Why these drugs should be legalized in the United States? The reason why our government is looking into legalizing these drugs is because they are looking at it as an economic perspective using supply, demand, and elasticity. When the government started thinking about legalizing many drugs they were thinking about how they could stop spending a lot of money and start making money. Many Government officials have argued that the current war on drugs, has been unsuccessful, and associated spending on police, prisons, and overburdened court systems, and many untold human cost. By legalizing these drugs they would be able to tax, for example, alcohol and tobacco, and maybe be able to reduce drug trafficking.
When the economist were looking at the supply and demand for heroin and cocaine, they look at the price of the product. They found that the production of heroin and cocaine, are cheap to produce and could be sold at a low price in a …show more content…

Why because the price for those hard drugs went up so the demand for those hard drugs went down which lead to the demand for alcohol to go up. By taking that if the government legalizes drugs then we would have an increase in those dabblers to becoming drug addicts’ because of their demand for more cocaine and heroin. When looking at the numbers a prediction from the economists predicts that if the government would legalize heroin and cocaine the street price would reduce up to 60%. Form a 60 percent decrease in price would have a 54% increase of dabbler users of heroin and a 33% increase of dabbler users of cocaine.
