U.S. states raising billions of dollars on the basis of tax revenue of marijuana could be put towards good use. Each state struggles with underfunded programs, jobs that make too much, and jobs that should make more. With increases in revenue, states could afford to fund their underfunded programs or better fulfil their duties. A good example of this are road treatment and handling; this is a responsibility for each individual state. If one were to drive from Missouri to Illinois, they would notice a difference in the road conditions. In Missouri, they would see well-constructed roads in good condition, or even laborers working on the roads as the state has the money to take care of issues. Being that Illinois is in debt and does not have the …show more content…
There are many cases that people see on Facebook or other social media and news outlets where it is reported that people who commit more serious crimes, such as driving under the influence and hurting people, get off easier on technicalities than people who possess drugs, specifically marijuana, do. With the crime and jail rate being so high in America, that is concerning because it poses questions such as “what does our society value”? In research conducted by the Criminal Justice Policy Foundation, it was found that police officers arrest 700,000 people annually for some sort of marijuana violation, and around 90% of those arrests are based on just possessing it (Cannabis Policy). This is a very large number for marijuana alone; imagine the number once all other drugs and crimes are taken into account. Legalizing the drug could decrease that number substantially by reducing the amount of people arrested for possessing it alone. Imprisoning people is very expensive for tax payers which can relate back to the point that legalizing the drug would make the United States money and save citizens money in a case like so. The criminalization is outdated and unnecessary as it is no more harmful than other, harsher dugs and alcohol. The government should save jail space for actual …show more content…
As of now in America, the drug is legalized in nearly half of the 50 states for medical use and is legalized in very few states. With the legalization of marijuana, it would allow all people of age to purchase and use the drug as desired. This sounds concerning as there is no telling how one person’s use may vary from another’s; this concerned cannot be blamed. If marijuana were legalized in the United States, there would need to be guidelines and new laws set in place to protect the people using it as well as nonusers who do not wanted to be bothered by those who would use it. The drug would need to be viewed similarly to alcohol. Some laws and rules that should be implemented include, but are not limited to, no driving under the influence, must be of age to purchase (21+), no buying or consuming for minors unless with a doctor’s permission, and probably many more. It is hard to say or guess exactly what rules the government would implement for its citizens, but they would be necessary. If the laws were broken, it could be treated as if a minor were caught with or consuming alcohol and land a spot on the persons permeant record. Legalizing marijuana would not be all “fun and games” for the United States
