Is legalizing medical marijuana in certain states really helping people that really need it? “Marijuana has been approved for medical use in several states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington” (NORML, 2012a).(1) “The medical use of marijuana has been studied for decades, and experts still don’t agree on how safe it is or how well it works” (4). “Marijuana is a drug that is made up of the leaves, flowers, and buds of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa” (4). Medical marijuana is a drug that is used to treat a variety of symptoms and conditions such as chronic pain, arthritis, migraines, AIDS, cancer, seizures, and etc. Medical marijuana is not a drug that will cure a disease or treat a disease it will only relieve people symptoms. “Medical marijuana should only be used after treatments with commonly used medicines have been tried” (4). “Marijuana is usually smoked, but can also be brewed into tea, vaporized, sprayed under the tongue, applied to the skin, or cooked in food” (4).
