Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Driving Age

The driving age in Victoria for a provisional driver to obtain their provisional license should be lowered from 18 to 17. Every other state in Australia already has the age to get their P’s at 17 and in the northern territory it is at 16 and 9 months so why should Victorians be the ones that have to wait an extra year when every other state and territory has proved that it is safe and does not mean more accidents, countries such as the United States who have the age 17 have shown that the law is fine and safe and by lowering the age the it is bound to reduce drink driving accidents as teens are now exposed to one earlier than the other allowing them to get over that novelty stage of wanting to do both, thus creating less accidents.

The United States driving age is controlled by the states but the age for a restricted license the same as a provisional license is between 15 and 17 by all 50 states. The percentages for the amount crashes of those between 15 and 20 at a rate of 108 per 100,000 deaths and for 20-25 the rate is 181 per 100,000 deaths so a small increase but still more deaths which means that having a lower driving age does not create more deaths. The United Kingdom has their driving age at 17 so this rate works off if every demographic had a million people this is how many would perish as this makes it fair on each demographic. Drivers aged between 17 and 19 would only have 13 deaths per million in comparison to drivers between 20 and 29 would be 22 per million which means that in the UK where the driving age is 17 almost double the amount of deaths happen to more experienced drivers then those of a young age, meaning that age is not the problem and 17 year olds are perfectly capable of driving alone. This shows that the Victorian government needs to understand that lowering the age won’t create more deaths it will actually create less deaths going by the other states and similar countries such as the United Kingdom and the United
