Pros And Cons Of Therapeutic Cloning

511 Words3 Pages

A clone is an organism or group of organisms or cells descended from a single ancestor and having genetic material identical to that of the ancestor. A scientists in scotland had successfully cloned a sheep named Dolly, in 1996. Dolly was the first Adult mammal ever cloned. The first animal cloning experiments were done with frogs in the 1970’s the experiments were not successful because the cloned frogs only lived to the tadpole stage. Cloning Experiments continued over the next two decades. Scientist made 276 attempts before creating Dolly. There are 3 types of cloning. One method is gene cloning. Gene cloning begins by separating a specific length of DNA that contains the target gene. Gene cloning is also widely used in agriculture to create new strains of crops and …show more content…

Therapeutic Cloning is the replication of human embryos to harvest stem cells for medical uses. Therapeutic Cloning allows an individual’s own cells to be used to treat or cure that person’s disease. It is the removal of a nucleus which contains the somatic cell. A somatic cell is any cell of a living organism except the reproductive cells. One of the many goals of cloning is to bring extinct animals back but there’s been so much controversy over the reason for and how it will put humanity in danger. Scientists in 2009 attempted but it was not successful to bring back a bucardo. This species was declared extinct in 2000. From frozen skin taken from a bucardo taken in 2003 was used but the newborn died shortly after due to physical defects in its lungs. One of the main arguments is that we will bring back a species into an environment different from the one they lived in. Bringing back extinct animals could bring back so many unknown diseases that we are not ready to deal with it and could possibly cause a mass plague. Another major question that people have is can clones reproduce. A clone can reproduce offspring just like other animals and clones can be cloned
