According to an article by Donate Life America titled "Statistics," “An average of 21 people die each day because the organs they need are not donated in time” (Donate Life America). With the advancements in technology, scientists can clone cells and organs to use for transplants now. However, this topic has elicited various debates. The debate that this argument focuses on is its morality. Before explaining the controversy, some definitions are needed. Cloning is the process of creating an embryo by using technology to replicate the genetic makeup of a single individual, making identical genetic copies. There are two types of cloning, reproductive and therapeutic. The type that is the focus of this argument is therapeutic cloning. Charlotte Kfoury defines, in her article “Therapeutic Cloning: Promises and Issues”, therapeutic cloning as “the transfer of nuclear material isolated from a somatic cell into an enucleated oocyte …show more content…

According to Kfoury, “therapeutic cloning and stem cell research stir an ethical controversy due to the source of embryonic stem cells, taken from aborted fetuses, unutilized zygotes and embryos morphologically incapable of in utero implantation, the latter representing 60% of all embryos created through IVF” (Kfoury). This means that most of the argument is about the source rather than the process. Contributing to the topic, Christof Tannert wrote in his article “Thou Shalt Not Clone”, “The sole purpose of therapeutic cloning is to derive new knowledge and to search for new ways to reduce human disease” (Tannert). Tannert is saying that scientists are using this type of cloning to help humanity in the understanding of illnesses of various natures, and with fighting against these ailments. I agree that therapeutic cloning would be beneficial to society. Therapeutic cloning is mostly used in stem cell research. Many people connect the two and refer to them as similar, or at least in the same category: biomedical
