Since the police and city hall were against the general strike, labor union got little attention. (Wignot, Triangel Fire) In this case, Triangle Factory workers had very little power compared to their employers because they were lower-class working people and the bosses were upper-class and wealthy. They could never improve their working conditions as individuals because they would be fired if they complained about their jobs to the bosses. So the labor union was the best way to combine their resources and power together collectively to create benefit for all workers.
Organized Labor DBQ Starting in the 1870’s, there were large movements pushing to better the lives of the working and labor classes. Various unions were formed throughout the country, each with their own agendas, while progressives put pressures on the government for reforms. With corporations working against them, however, organized labor was not very successful in improving workers’ lives, a result of the awful plight of the workers, the power of the corporation, and the futility of strikes. The workers’ plight in the late 19th century was bleak.
The workers at Pullman went on a strike in 1894 because they wanted to improve economic conditions and gain recognition for the union. Workers formed into unions, such as the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers (AAISW) and the American Railway Union (ARU), to secure higher wages, shorter hours, improve safety conditions and a fairer measure of control of the labor process (Hewitt and Lawson 550). Labor unions became a popular vehicle for labor discontent by collective bargaining. In other words, workers tried to talk to the leader of a union about working conditions. Workers wanted to increase their “strength in numbers” (class notes).
As the world developing, the advancements in technology has become a heated topic. While the majority of labor union members believe it is immoral to have hi-tech machines do the jobs of human workers, the other majority of non-union workers opposed this idea. It has been said: "Majority ignorance is as common as majority wisdom" (Ruggiero, 2015, p. 23). Therefore, majority view should not be used as a measurement of morality in this instance, or in any other cases. For this case, what the development of the advanced technology does is not just to eliminate old jobs and also creates new jobs.
The union would help to make for more sanitized, safer work environments (“Labor Movement”, n.d.). They helped the workers gain better pay, shorter hours, and an overall happier work environment. All geared toward the laborer, not the employer for a change. At times, the union would organize strikes to try to make the employer do what they wanted; however, at this time they rarely succeeded, as do now. Some employees were met with opposition from the owners or management of the industries almost to an intimidation standpoint so not to join, in which grew worse if they did join.
There was a correct way to settle the disputes between organized labor and big businesses. The group of people that were correct about settling the disputes were the organized labor. Instead of following socialism, the workers formed unions. They formed unions to gain power in their jobs. There is a more successful union between the National Trades Union and the American Federation of Labor.

Labor unions arose from the outcry of the working class after being subjected to borderline dehumanizing conditions of the workforce. Workers were treated as disposable waste capable of performing tasks and lacked the respect they deserved. There was a general disregard for the working man, woman, and child, and it was evident through their pay, working hours, unsafe working conditions, sexism, racism, or age. Take note, as well, that many of these conditions were tolerated first out of desperation and pressure from incoming immigrants. Otherwise, surely strikes and unions would have risen sooner.
The history of unions in the early stages experienced many obstacles. Starting from local craft unions and forming into national unions to the creation of American Federation of Labor and the Committee for Industrial Organization and then to the merging between them. Unions are classified on four goals including: uplift which is concerned with social issues including education and labor management systems; revolutionary unions aim to overthrow the capitalist system and replacing it with worker control; business unionism which represents employees and their wages, hours, and terms of employment; predatory unionism happens when the goal to enhance itself is at the expense of its workers. Up until the Civil War, unions represented certain trades.
This meant that labor unions posed formidable opponents to companies because they could organize strikes and lobby for their rights. One of the first large trade unions was formed in New York and called the General Trades’ Union (GTU), which later developed into the National Trades Union (NTU). The main goals of the NTU were to encourage the moral and intellectual interests and wellbeing of the working classes, spread knowledge to members, establish GTUs in the United States, and unite the working class. The NTU was successful in reducing the workday from twelve hours to ten hours as well as uniting the working class by amassing 300,000 members and representing twenty to thirty percent of all workers in the areas in which it was present. Unions forced changes by using collective bargaining, which included strikes, to damage businesses and make them negotiate improvements posed by the unions.
In 1866, the skilled and unskilled workers merged and formed a union. Many people don’t understand the significance of the act. Not only people gained rights, but they also held power. The railway strike in 1877 was the first evidence of how powerful the union can be. The next protest in 1894 when workers in Illinois organized and with the help of the federal government achieved their goals was significant.
When analyzing the first part of “The Grapes of Wrath”, written by John Steinbeck, one can visualize the struggle of the times that sharecroppers and farmers went through in the Midwest area. Steinbeck depicts the era of America’s Great Depression which lasted until sometime after World War II. Steinbeck utilizes the first part of “The Grapes of Wrath” and the infelicity that fell the Joad and Wilson family as an example to show how the terrible drought known as the Dust Bowel affected many families from the American Midwest which also included Oklahoma.
