The purpose of education in the United States is to prepare students to be an effective member of society by teaching students how to think critically and logically by teaching the necessary skills to make intelligent decisions outside of school. Elementary education is important because it is necessary to teach the basics to second to fifth graders (how to read, how to write, math, etc.). By teaching the basics to children in creative ways, they are more likely to absorb and retain the information. By being able to absorb and retain information well, children can then be taught to think critically on what they learned and assess their own knowledge of the subject. While in elementary, children can be taught the small things (like sharing, being accepting of others, hygiene, how to make change, etc.) that can be applied throughout their entire lives. …show more content…

As a teacher, I would describe myself a motivator and a supporter. I am a motivator because I encourage people to do their best – even if they don’t think they can. I am able to motivate people to better themselves and finish what they started. I am a supporter because I am able to help the people around me feel as though they have someone who believe in them. I would most likely employ experimental learning (working with real-life objects and/or scenarios to teach a lesson) or differentiated instruction (helps students with different learning styles, abilities, and readiness learn) to facilitate student achievement. My philosophy is Progressivism – a student-centered philosophy. I will integrate the study of academic subjects around the needs and experiences of my students.
