There are four main goals of progressivism. The first goal is to protect social welfare. The next task is to encourage moral improvement. The third target is to establish economic reform and the last goal is to promote efficiency ("Origins of Progressivism"). They promoted the traditional education style that had been in place, “…the traditional teacher-dominated, subject-centered curriculum” (Urban 197). Urban tells us that despite some reforms made by the pedagogical progressives, they overall were unable to break American education completely away from the rigid system already in place. “Learning to do, Doing to Learn,” this first half of the FFA motto speaks to me as I develop my teaching style and philosophy. Ever since I learned the FFA motto in high school, I have chosen to live my life and fashion a functional classroom environment by it. The motto best exemplifies progressivism, which is the idea that education occurs best in a student-centered setting, should focus on experimentation and the use of the scientific method (1999). In order for students to be engaged in their learning, I, as the teacher, need to provide an interest for them based on their needs and interests.

Even though many medical methods of the Middle Ages were questionable, many are still used today. These unique treatments were used because most people didn’t live long in the extremely poor conditions. During the Middle Ages, many crude medical methods and treatments were used. Some of these treatments included using live animals and insects, or very unsanitary tools.

Existentialism holds that "'authority' is found in individual freedom" (Modern Philosophies, n.d.). Student choice is essential in this school of thinking and learners play and active role in their education. Progressivism, like existentialism, sets its focus on the child. This theory supports the idea that students should have meaningful experiences to enhance learning (Cohen, 1999). It agrees which existentialism in that it believes students should have options and choice in education.
