Providing patient care, training and scope of practice are some of the characteristics how nurses can be distinguished from other health care providers. It is a profession within a health care area that involves taking care of a patient by delivering personalized care to the needs of each individualized unique patient, families, and communities. The paradigm of theory development, research, evidenced based practice and policy can be very crucial in nursing because it is the basis to deliver quality patient care. IOM’s recommendation to nurses is to practice to the full extent of their education and training. This recommendation is important because it will provide patient-centered, accessible and affordable care now and in the future to improved health outcomes (Tillett,2011), as well as to help new graduate nurses develop skills that are needed to build for safe environment and what needs to be improved. As a future nurse leader who will act as a catalyst between the patient and physician, I will have the opportunity to enhance my capabilities and efficiency in improving the care of my patients, it will enable me to understand the conditions of my patients since I will be able to focus on communication skills, use of technology as well as work with other interdisciplinary teams. I will implement this recommendation by standing up for my rights as a Registered Nurse by practicing my competency and skills to be able to always serve my patients. I will always provide the best possible care no matter where the situation may be and always protect my patient's rights through advocacy. In any field of health care where physicians and nurses interact with one another for the purpose of quality patient care, it is vital for them to work together as one and understand the needs of their patients as well as each other’s roles and responsibilities. In short, teamwork should prevail for excellent patient service. Therefore, being in full partnership as a nurse with the physician and other healthcare professional is another recommendation that is applied by the RWJ-IOM report. I have witnessed teamwork and collaboration between nurses and physicians during my preceptor rotation which resulted to better outcome for my patients. I realized that as a part of the health care teams, I have the responsibility to be aware of what to expect, know what to do to improve our patients’ quality of life and avoid the barriers that would affect better teamwork and collaboration between nurses and physicians. Partnering with other health specialist can also be used to increase the safety of the patients since it assists to reduce the medical errors that may arise and also reduces burnout among nurses (Dickson & Flynn, 2009).
